UK–EU alignment bill signals major shift in future trade strategy
14 May 2026
The UK government has introduced the new European Partnership Bill, a significant step towards closer regulatory cooperation with the EU while remaining outside both the single market and customs union.
The legislation is designed to support greater alignment in selected areas including food standards, emissions and electricity regulation, with the aim of reducing trade friction and improving business efficiency in UK–EU trade.
For UK importers and exporters, this could bring important practical benefits. Closer alignment may help reduce some of the compliance burdens that have increased since Brexit, particularly around SPS requirements, product standards and regulatory divergence in key sectors.
For businesses trading with the EU, this could mean simpler documentation requirements, smoother border processes and lower administrative costs over time.
However, businesses will also need to stay alert. Closer cooperation may require firms to monitor future EU regulatory changes more closely, particularly where operating across both UK and EU markets.
Overall, the bill signals a strategic move towards easing trade barriers with the UK’s largest trading partner, creating both opportunities and compliance considerations for businesses.
