UK and Mexico strengthen trade ties as CPTPP milestone takes effect
23 June 2026
Trade between the UK and Mexico has entered a new phase following the implementation of the UK's Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) provisions with Mexico from 22 June 2026.
The development follows Mexico's ratification of the UK's accession to CPTPP, allowing UK businesses to access the agreement's benefits when trading with one of Latin America's largest economies.
For UK importers and exporters, the milestone provides access to CPTPP provisions with Mexico, creating new opportunities to benefit from preferential tariff treatment and a modern framework for international trade.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced tariffs on a wide range of goods
- Improved market access opportunities
- Enhanced provisions for services and digital trade
- Greater certainty through transparent trade rules
- Simplified trading arrangements across CPTPP markets
Mexico is already an important trading partner for the UK, and the move further strengthens commercial ties between the two countries while expanding the practical benefits of CPTPP membership.
The agreement may be particularly relevant for businesses involved in manufacturing, food and drink, consumer goods, industrial products and professional services, where reduced trade barriers can improve competitiveness and support market expansion.
Businesses seeking to benefit from CPTPP preferences should ensure they understand the relevant Rules of Origin requirements and documentation obligations. As with other free trade agreements, preferential tariff treatment will generally depend on goods meeting the agreement's origin criteria.
The development also reinforces the UK's growing participation in CPTPP, one of the world's largest free trade blocs. The partnership spans economies across the Asia-Pacific region and provides UK businesses with access to a network of fast-growing international markets.
For businesses already trading with Mexico, or considering the market for the first time, now may be an appropriate time to review export opportunities, sourcing strategies and supply chain arrangements.
The milestone highlights the continuing importance of free trade agreements as a tool for improving market access and supporting international growth.
