Window Open for Duty Suspensions & Autonomous Tariff Quotas
26 June 2023
The two-month 2023 application window for new duty suspensions is now open. The deadline for applications is 11.59 pm on Sunday 6 August 2023. This is an opportunity to apply for a temporary reduction to tariffs, including on inputs into production.
Duty suspensions help British businesses stay competitive in the global marketplace. They do so by suspending import duties on certain goods: generally ones that are used in the production – components, and materials. They only suspend duties, and do not affect VAT. Duty suspensions allow unlimited quantities to be imported into the UK at a reduced tariff rate, whereas autonomous tariff quotas (ATQs) allow limited quantities to be imported at a reduced rate.
If your business makes an application for a duty suspension, it will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Duty suspensions and ATQs are temporary but last for 2 years, and can be used by any UK business while in force.
The last duty suspension and ATQ window was in the summer of 2021. It’s important that you take advantage of the current window, because it will be many months before the next opportunity comes along.
