UK Government suspends Export Control Classification Service

13 October 2026

UK exporters who rely on Government advice to determine whether their goods, software or technology are subject to export controls will need to make alternative arrangements following the suspension of a key advisory service.

The Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) temporarily suspended its Control List Classification (CLC) Service on 12 October 2026, citing increasing demand on resources and the need to prioritise export licence applications.

The service previously allowed businesses to request advice on whether their products appeared on the UK's strategic export control lists.

During the suspension, new classification requests will not be processed. Applications submitted before 12 October will continue to be considered, although responses may take longer than usual.

The Government expects to provide a further update before the end of 2026. For further details, see the Government's Notice to Exporters 2026/22.

Need help with your export control classification?

Exporters remain responsible for determining whether their goods, software or technology are controlled and ensuring that any necessary export licences are obtained before shipment.

This is particularly important for businesses exporting dual-use goods – products, software or technology that may have both civilian and military applications.

An incorrect classification or failure to obtain a required licence can result in shipment delays, compliance problems and potentially serious legal consequences.

We provide specialist support to help exporters navigate strategic export controls and establish whether their products are subject to licensing requirements.

Our export control classification service can help businesses assess their goods, software and technology against the relevant UK control lists, identify potential licensing requirements and understand the next steps.

Whether you have an immediate export enquiry, a product that requires assessment or a wider portfolio of goods to review, our team can help you approach your export control obligations with greater confidence.

Our specialists are here to help you keep your exports moving while meeting your compliance obligations. Contact our team to discuss your requirements.
