UK and Switzerland agree landmark services trade deal
14 July 2026
The UK and Switzerland have agreed a new services trade deal that is expected to strengthen commercial ties between the two countries and create new opportunities for UK businesses exporting professional and digital services.
Described by the Government as the UK's most significant services trade agreement to date, the deal is expected to increase UK services exports to Switzerland by £5.2 billion annually in the long term, while supporting growth across sectors including financial services, legal, consultancy, architecture and engineering.
The agreement builds on the existing UK–Switzerland Free Trade Agreement, which already covers trade in goods, by introducing new commitments designed to make it easier for businesses to supply services across both markets.
What does this mean for UK businesses?
The new agreement includes several measures intended to reduce barriers for businesses trading services between the UK and Switzerland.
These include:
- Visa-free business travel for eligible service professionals for up to 90 days each year.
- Easier temporary transfers of employees between UK and Swiss offices, with assignments of up to five years under simplified arrangements.
- Commitments to remove mobile roaming charges for travellers.
- Future access for UK passport holders to Swiss e-gates, helping reduce border delays.
- Enhanced provisions covering digital trade and cross-border services.
Opportunities for exporters
Switzerland is one of the UK's largest trading partners for services, with annual bilateral services trade worth around £30 billion.
The agreement is expected to benefit businesses operating in sectors such as:
- Financial and professional services.
- Consultancy.
- Legal services.
- Engineering.
- Architecture.
- Technology and digital services.
By reducing administrative barriers and improving mobility for professionals, the deal should make it easier for UK businesses to deliver services, support clients and expand their presence in the Swiss market.
The agreement also demonstrates the UK's continued focus on securing modern trade agreements that go beyond goods by addressing services, digital trade and business mobility. Legal and ratification procedures are expected to be completed before the agreement is formally signed later this year.
