Trade Lanes Update - Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

2 January 2024

In the Southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, carriers have decided to route their vessels around Cape of Good Hope, to ensure a safe voyage and thereby avoiding the Suez Canal, we wish to draw your attention to the fact that any tariffs or rates offered by Shipco Transport, may be subject to an Emergency Surcharge Fee (or similar labelled charge, as per local tariff and rating practice). For your information and easy reference, in the Shipco Transport Bill of Lading terms and conditions, chapter 13 describes the rights of the carrier under situations we are currently experiencing with vessels being re-routed etc.
From an operational perspective, we are closely monitoring the situation, and while there has been information circulated indicating that certain carriers are evaluating the possibility of resuming service via the Suez Canal, in extension of the announced multi-national security initiative Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG), now having been established and deployed to allow maritime commerce to pass through the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden, it is still too early to confirm when the route via the Suez Canal will resume.
