Stern section of vessel sinks off coast of India
The stern section of MOL vessel 'Comfort sank off the coast of India last week. About 1,700 containers were lost with 1,500 tonnes of heavy fuel oil likely to cause pollution. MOL has reported that the aft section of the vessel in open sea in 4,000 m of water near 14°26’N 66°26’E with the loss of 1,700 containers although some boxes were seen to be floating near the site.
MOL confirmed that that no large spillage of oil was visible from the fuel remaining in the stricken vessels aft section.
Meanwhile, the 8,100 teu ship’s bow section was under tow towards a refuge port and was said to be “stable”.
