New UK–Germany Industrial Tech Corridor opens opportunities for British businesses

20 October 2026

A new UK–Germany Industrial Tech Corridor is set to create opportunities for British businesses to develop partnerships with major German companies, attract investment and expand into one of Europe's largest industrial markets.

Announced on 8 October 2026 during the UK Prime Minister's visit to Berlin, the initiative aims to connect technology companies, manufacturers, industrial leaders and investors across both countries, with an initial focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and high-value industrial applications.

Backed by major German companies including Siemens, Bosch, Allianz and RWE, the corridor is designed to help innovative businesses develop commercial relationships, bring new technologies into industrial use and expand internationally.

The announcement forms part of a wider strengthening of UK–German economic cooperation under the Kensington Treaty, with further commitments covering research, innovation and investment.

Connecting British innovation with German industry

The Industrial Tech Corridor will bring together high-growth technology businesses and established industrial companies, creating opportunities to develop and commercialise new technologies.

A central objective is to help promising innovations move beyond research and development into practical industrial applications, particularly where AI and advanced technologies can improve productivity, manufacturing processes and supply chain performance.

For UK businesses, this could provide new routes to working with German manufacturers, technology companies and investors, particularly in sectors where industrial expertise and digital innovation increasingly overlap.

The initiative is expected to support:

  • Artificial intelligence and industrial automation: Partnerships to develop and deploy AI technologies in manufacturing and other industrial settings

  • Advanced manufacturing and engineering: Opportunities to integrate new technologies into production processes and improve industrial efficiency

  • Robotics and smart manufacturing: Collaboration on automation, intelligent systems and next-generation industrial applications

  • Energy and clean technologies: Potential partnerships involving energy innovation, advanced engineering and industrial decarbonisation

  • Research and technology commercialisation: Connections between innovative companies, established manufacturers, research organisations and investors

A dedicated UK–Germany Tech Corridor roundtable is planned for later in autumn 2026, bringing together senior executives from major industrial companies, AI businesses and government representatives to explore practical opportunities for cooperation.

The corridor is intended to help businesses move from initial connections towards commercial partnerships, although details of how companies will access the initiative have yet to be announced.

New investment commitments already emerging

The announcement was accompanied by several examples of businesses expanding their activities across the UK and Germany.

Munich-based robotics research company MicroAGI has announced plans to expand its presence in London, creating 180 highly skilled jobs.

German energy technology company Proxima Fusion is also expanding its operations at Culham in Oxfordshire, with the potential to quadruple its workforce at the site by 2028.

Meanwhile, British AI software company Quantexa has committed to establishing a dedicated sovereign technology unit in Germany, supporting the deployment of its technology in both markets.

These developments illustrate the potential for closer industrial and technology cooperation to generate investment, support business expansion and strengthen commercial links between the two countries.

They also demonstrate that opportunities extend beyond technology developers themselves, potentially creating demand for specialist engineering, components, professional services and supply chain expertise.

€20 million commitment to quantum technology research

Alongside the Industrial Tech Corridor, the UK and Germany announced a joint commitment of approximately €20 million (£17 million) to support collaborative quantum technology research.

The funding will strengthen research cooperation in areas including quantum computing and sensing technologies, with potential applications across manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and other industries.

According to the joint government statement, the programme will increase total bilateral quantum research funding to €19.5 million, supporting ten projects, including five additional research initiatives.

The investment forms part of a wider effort to strengthen both countries' capabilities in emerging technologies and accelerate the development of commercially useful applications.

The UK and Germany also launched a separate £2.4 million joint research and development funding call in September 2026, supporting collaborative projects in clean energy, life sciences and engineering biology.

Eligible research teams from both countries can apply for funding of up to £350,000 to develop innovative technologies, products and services.

Building on the Kensington Treaty

The Industrial Tech Corridor is a flagship initiative under the UK–Germany Kensington Treaty, signed in July 2025.

The treaty establishes a framework for closer cooperation across economic development, science, technology, security and investment.

During the Berlin meeting on 8 October, the two governments formally completed the treaty's ratification process and agreed further measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

These included plans for closer engagement between regional business communities, with a UK–Germany Regional Dialogue expected in 2027.

Both countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in space technology, including work towards a new agreement covering civil, commercial and security-related applications.

Together, these measures reflect a broader effort to strengthen economic and technological links between the UK and Germany, extending beyond the initial Industrial Tech Corridor announcement.

Opportunities for UK exporters and technology businesses

Germany is one of the UK's most important trading partners and a major European market for advanced manufacturing, engineering and industrial technology.

Its established industrial base, particularly in automotive manufacturing, machinery, chemicals, energy and automation, creates potential opportunities for UK businesses supplying innovative technologies, specialist components and technical expertise.

The new corridor could be particularly relevant to UK companies developing products or services that help manufacturers improve efficiency, adopt automation, strengthen supply chains or introduce new technologies.

For businesses already trading with Germany, the initiative may provide opportunities to deepen existing commercial relationships and explore collaborative projects.

For companies considering entering the German market, closer links between technology innovators and established industrial businesses could help identify potential customers, distributors, investors and development partners.

The planned industry roundtable later this autumn will be an important next step in determining how the initiative develops and how businesses can become involved.

While the corridor does not introduce new tariff preferences or change existing customs arrangements, it represents a further commitment to supporting cross-border investment, innovation and commercial partnerships between two of Europe's largest economies.
