Mixed but positive exporting picture from Chamber Surveys

29 October 2013

A mixed, but generally positive, picture on Yorkshire’s exporting emerges from two new Chamber of Commerce Quarterly Economic Surveys.

According to Leeds, York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, overseas markets continue to present growth opportunities for companies prepared to take the initiative.

Service sector exports remain strong with 41% of companies reporting increased trade in the last three months with professional and business services once again leading the field followed by ‘other’ services and  marketing and media.

A total of 42% of manufacturers also report increasing international sales leaving an improved net balance of +25. Forward orders also show improvements across both service and manufacturing with the net balances up +1% and +6% respectively.

A more complex picture is revealed by Bradford Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey Report which says that, while 29% of exporters saw improvements, service sector sales were down 12 points to 14 with orders down 9 points to 12.

For manufacturing, sales were up two points to 17 while orders were down four points to zero.

The Bradford Chamber report says: “However, we think that the overall message is still a positive one.”
