Landmark China & Hong Kong Trade Mission Delivers Insight, Access and Growth Opportunities
7 May 2026
The China and Hong Kong Trade Mission brought together the largest Yorkshire trade delegation to these markets to date, uniting a diverse group of UK businesses for five intensive days of high-level meetings, market exploration and commercial relationship-building across Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Delivered by West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Chamber International, the mission provided delegates with direct access to influential organisations, strategic networks and first-hand commercial insight across two of Asia’s most significant trading regions.
Representing sectors including logistics, automotive, manufacturing, software, education, consultancy and professional services, delegates from businesses including China Marketing Corp, Sound Leisure, Tudor International Freight, Autohorn Fleet Services, RJJ Software, Richmond International Academic & Soccer Academy, Jolene and QL Consulting joined us to gain practical understanding of two of Asia’s most commercially influential markets.
Far more than a fact-finding visit, the programme was carefully designed to help businesses move beyond market curiosity and into informed international strategy — combining direct engagement, practical insight and relationship development across some of China and Hong Kong’s most significant commercial ecosystems.
Guangzhou: Building the Foundations for Informed Market Entry
Our mission began in Guangzhou, where delegates engaged with both The British Chamber of Commerce South China and the British Consulate General Guangzhou for strategic briefings covering business establishment, intellectual property, employment law, product supply chains and wider market-entry considerations.
These opening sessions gave delegates immediate access to the kind of exporter-critical knowledge that is often difficult to acquire remotely, ensuring businesses were not simply looking at China as an opportunity — but understanding the structures that underpin successful engagement.
The day also included the formal Sinoport partnership event with Gold Sponsor Teesside International Airport, highlighting a growing strategic logistics connection between the UK and China and underlining how infrastructure partnerships can support regional exporters seeking practical access to Asia. This milestone demonstrated how stronger air cargo and supply chain links can create meaningful commercial advantages for UK businesses looking to strengthen international reach.
Shenzhen: Understanding Scale, Infrastructure and Competitive Capability
Shenzhen offered delegates an immersive look into the scale, speed and sophistication of modern Chinese business.
A visit to Yantian International Container Terminals — one of the world’s busiest and most advanced logistics hubs — provided exporters with extraordinary perspective on international shipping, infrastructure efficiency and global supply chain dynamics. For many delegates, it was a powerful reminder that successful exporting depends not only on selling products, but on understanding the logistical ecosystems that move them.
Adam Johnson, Director at Tudor International Freight, reflected:
“For us, this mission wasn’t just about exploration — it was about strengthening relationships and understanding the logistics landscape in much greater depth. Seeing infrastructure and operations at this scale gives you a completely different perspective on how global trade really works.”
Delegates then took part in a strategic networking and roundtable programme hosted by the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), offering valuable opportunities to connect with regional stakeholders, discuss collaboration and better understand Shenzhen’s wider commercial environment. This was followed by an evening reception hosted by The British Chamber of Commerce South China, whose hospitality and regional expertise further strengthened delegates’ understanding of doing business in this fast-moving market.
BYD: Innovation, Industrial Strategy and Market Perspective
For many on the mission, the visit to BYD Headquarters in Shenzhen was a defining highlight.
Hosted with support from Gold Sponsor BYD Europe, delegates experienced first-hand the scale and pace of innovation driving one of the world’s most influential manufacturing ecosystems — from electric vehicles and battery technology to vertically integrated production models.
The visit provided a critical exporter insight: understanding not just the products coming out of China, but the systems, investment and innovation shaping global competition. It also demonstrated how strategic sponsor involvement can significantly enhance the practical value of a trade mission by giving delegates rare access to globally significant industry leaders.
Hong Kong: Gateway Strategy, Finance and Regional Expansion
The final stage of our mission transitioned into Hong Kong, where delegates engaged with The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the British Consulate General Hong Kong, HSBC Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP).
Through these sessions, delegates explored practical business realities ranging from taxation, corporate structures and international banking to innovation ecosystems and wider regional market-entry strategy. The support of these organisations provided invaluable context around Hong Kong’s continuing role as a gateway for businesses seeking broader Asian expansion.
Chris Black, Joint Chairman of Sound Leisure, reflected on the experience:
“Nothing replaces being there in person. The conversations, the connections and seeing how business is actually done in Hong Kong gives you a far more accurate understanding of the market — and that’s what helps you make better decisions.”
These engagements reinforced how Hong Kong continues to combine legal familiarity, financial sophistication and strategic regional accessibility for UK exporters.
Why Trade Missions Matter: The Exporter Advantage
Across every stage of the programme, this mission reinforced why trade missions remain such a valuable tool for exporters:
- First-hand market intelligence beyond desk research
• Practical exposure to infrastructure, logistics and compliance realities
• Direct access to British Chambers, Consulates and trusted facilitators
• Relationship-building with local stakeholders and commercial partners
• Stronger strategic confidence before committing major resources
Christina Xu, Founder of China Marketing Corp, captured this value clearly:
“This trade mission stood out for its practical, on-the-ground insights into doing business across the Greater Bay Area, offering real visibility into operations, supply chains, and market dynamics rather than high-level overviews.
Being part of an official delegation also brings a level of credibility and access that enables more meaningful connections and supports long-term business opportunities in the China market.”
For many delegates, this was not simply a visit — it was an accelerated learning experience that transformed uncertainty into informed opportunity, supported throughout by expert facilitators, strategic sponsors and high-level hosts across China and Hong Kong.
Nikki Clow, Head of International at Chamber International:
“China and Hong Kong are markets of enormous opportunity, but they are also markets where practical understanding is essential. This mission was designed to give businesses direct access to the people, places and insights that help transform export ambition into meaningful strategic action.
By bringing together expert briefings, in-market visits and high-quality connections, businesses are able to build the confidence and clarity they need to take their next international steps.”
Looking Forward
As global trade continues to evolve, we remain committed to helping UK businesses access international opportunities through practical, informed and commercially grounded engagement.
For exporters, this mission reinforced a simple but powerful principle: international growth is strongest when strategy is backed by real-world insight, trusted relationships and first-hand experience.
