FedEx to Double Flights at Teesside International Airport
27 November 2024
FedEx will double its flight capacity at Teesside International Airport (TIA), by increasing its number of flights to two per day, the company has announced.
In June this year, TIA welcomed its first flight under a new five-year deal with FedEx, the world’s largest express transportation company. As part of this agreement, FedEx established an airfreight handling facility and recommitted to its existing road operation at the site.
The planned increase represents a massive coup for the airport and the region. FedEx’s operations alone are currently providing capacity for 89 tonnes of cargo to be transported through the airport each week – this is set to double, to nearly 190 tonnes per week.
A group of top business leaders from the region, including West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce CEO James Mason, were invited to a special event at the airport on 21 November, showcasing the airport’s services for importers and exporters.
TIA is the UK’s most centrally-located cargo hub, covering almost 95% of England, Wales and Scotland in six hours by road. It is estimated that there are 71,000 businesses within an hour’s drive of the airport that could benefit from FedEx’s expansion.
2024 has been a particularly successful year for the airport, following on from being named UK and Irish Airport of the Year at the TTG Travel Industry Awards in 2023.
In a further show of commitment, in October TIA appointed air cargo stalwart and consultant Steven Verhasselt to lead business development and implement strategy, as it looks to expand its airfreight operation.
